Earth Overshoot Day – a wake up call for consumption habits

Earth Overshoot Day – a wake up call for consumption habits

27 September 2011 was Earth Overshoot Day – the day we reached our ecological budget for the year.

From here on, we are collectively overdrawn in our use of natural resources. More carbon dioxide enters the atmosphere than vegetation can remove, and nature is no longer able to meet our demand to produce raw materials for food – with grave consequences for the climate and the world’s biodiversity.

Green Shelves at Hadlow library

In June 2011 our local village library launched a new collection of environmentally-themed books. The ‘Green Shelves’ initiative was proposed by members of the HadLOW CARBON Community and the idea was supported by local library staff. More than 20 books made up the original collection, including books on topics such as gardening, recycling, food waste, climate change, saving energy, self-sufficiency and eco travel. To view the books in the collection click on this link Hadlow Green Shelves Reading list.
KCC is currently considering adding a series of children’s books to the ‘Green Shelves’.

Big Butterfly Count

The national big butterfly count has been extended until the 7th August so there is still time to join in and do one or more counts in your garden or the countryside, and encourage others to do so!

So far only myself and one other resident have done a count in Hadlow, and it would be really good to have better data for this area to help assess environmental changes – its quite easy and great fun – further details are at http://www.bigbutterflycount.org/.

Good luck!

St. Mary’s Church Flower Festival

Members of HadLOW CARBON Community created a stunning display to depict the Feeding of the Five Thousand, as part of the Church’s flower festival, held from 10th-12th June. The group aimed to reflect their values of sustainability, by using locally sourced plant material from hedgerows and surrounding areas. This gave the display a very naturalistic impression, receiving lots of enthusiastic comments from the many visitors. We would like to thank Hadlow College for generously lending us some drought tolerant plants that added further interest to the overall display. The event raised over £2,500 for the Church funds.

Celebration of local food

To launch our first edition of the ‘Local Food Directory – Food in and around Hadlow’ we organised a Celebration of local food event on Saturday 16 April 2011 at the Old School Hall in Hadlow. For the online version of the directory click here .
We had ten local stall holders with free tastings and a cake stall by the Hadlow WI and it turned out to be a very successful and well attended event.
View photos of the day in the slideshow below.

Special thanks to all the traders for their donations to the raffle. The first prize, a £50.00 voucher for a meal at The Harrow was won by a couple from Hever, who had read about the event in the Courier.
